The lakes were designated as a national park on April 8th, 1949, making it the largest, oldest, and most popular national park in Croatia. This park encompasses a forested mountain area featuring 16 lakes of varying sizes, all filled with crystal-clear blue water. The lakes are nourished by numerous rivers and streams and are interconnected through cascading waterfalls.

One of the park’s defining features is the travertine barriers, formed over ten thousand years. These natural formations, along with the park’s unique geographical and climatic conditions, have fostered a rich diversity of flora and fauna, making the park a stunning example of natural beauty and ecological richness.
